Member of Parliament Buddhika
Pathirana is undoubtedly the most prominent among the
emerging young national leaders in the contemporary national
politics of Sri
Lanka given his charismatic career as a grooming
Diplomat and Statesman par excellence in National Level. His
entry to the the 7th Parliament of
the Democratic
Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka is
not an accident, nor cakewalk but a strategic point in his
Political pathway. At the General
Election held
on 08th April 2010, he was elected to Parliament as the
Member of Parliament who polled the second highest
percentage of votes from the United
National Party, the largest political party in the
country. |

Earlier, at the provincial council elections held in 2004
and 2009, he was elected to the Southern Provincial Council
with the highest percentage of votes recorded from the
entire country and had the unique distinction of being the
youngest ever leader of opposition in a provincial council
in Sri Lanka. |

|
At the elections held in the years 2007 and 2008 for the
Executive Committee of the Young
Liberals and Democrats
of Asia (YLDA) of the Liberal
International, he was elected with the highest number
of votes for a candidate from the entire Asia. During the
period from 2006-2009, he functioned as the national
chairman of the Liberal Youth Guilds of Sri Lanka.
Buddhika’s knowledge in International Affairs, his travel
experiences to over 13 countries and participation in many
International workshops contributed immensely to have an
iconic International prescience. |

He received the award for the Most Outstanding Young Politician of
the Year at the JCI-HSBC -TOYP Award Ceremony held in the
year 2006. |

|
|
|
|
Buddhika also possesses considerable experience in the field
of media having served as a presenter and moderator of
political programs at SIRASA TV and TNL television channels
for nine years and is a pre-intern medical practitioner at
the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Kelaniya, Sri
Lanka. |

|
|
|
He is also a recipient of the President’s Scout Award in
1991, which is the highest honour conferred on a scout in
Sri Lanka. |
|

|
|
|
An old boy of Rahula
College, Matara, he served as a Senior
Prefect of
the school and was also the captain of the school debating
team. He is a gold and silver medal winning orator/ debater
and functioned as a Chairman of Muthuhara Children’s Club
and District Secretary of the Youth Red Cross Societies of
the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society. |

At the age of 17, he was appointed as principal of his
Buddhist Sunday School, thus becoming the youngest person
ever to hold such a post in Sri Lanka and is the Chief
Basnayake Nilame of the Matara Binara Maha Perahera. |
|
|
|
|
|
Buddhika’s roots are mediocre, paternal fraction is from a
village farmer community while maternal fraction is of
prominent dynasty. Yet, Buddhika’s journey through
political pathway sans from family backing or power
influence. It is sheer honesty, good work and credibility of
Buddhika that mattered in unprecedented voter
turnout. |
